  Bulb Planting

Since the late 1980’s the Society has from time to time carried out bulb planting to the approaches to Edgworth village. The first planting took place on land beside Bolton Road just above what is still known locally as ‘Loopy Loos’. Despite the very rough and wet ground, the daffodils still put on a splendid display each Spring.

That has not been the only difficulty. On two separate occasions we received the attentions of the local constabulary who were investigating complaints from concerned residents that we were digging up bulbs rather than planting them!

The approaches to Edgworth and Chapeltown are now resplendent with daffodils each year. Further planting took place in time for Spring 2013 with the addition of tulips at the Waterwheel site, which was first planted in 2011 (see below).

The map above shows the extent and location of our planting and includes areas in the woodland immediately behind The Barlow and also around the wall and paths to the rear of the children's play area. Please do not dig up the bulbs!

Bulb Planting, Waterwheel Site, Bury Road, Edgworth

The Old Waterwheel has recently been re-located from Turton Tower to a new site on Bury Road, Edgworth. ‘What a good idea to plant bulbs on the site’ someone said and the plans began. Several sacks of daffodils and a number of crocus bulbs were purchased. Arrangements were made to meet Society Members on a Saturday morning in October, 2011.

Several members turned up and the bulbs were planted in ground that was very hard and compacted. We encountered part of the macadam from the original road and so many stones.

To make matters worse, it started to rain very heavily and everyone was soaked and covered in mud. Despite these conditions it was a lot of fun, we gardeners are a hardy lot! The daffodils were all planted and a second party later planted the crocuses. We should see the result of our labours soon.
