Spring Visit

The Himalayan Garden & Sculpture Park, Ripon

and

Daleside Nurseries, Killinghall

Saturday, 18th May, 2019   Cost £22.00

The Himalayan Garden & Sculpture Park in Grewelthorpe is a private garden owned by Peter and Caroline Roberts. An extensive planting programme undertaken over the last 13 years has culminated in what is widely classed as the largest collection of rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias in the North, with almost 20,000 plants.

Considered by many to be a botanical masterpiece, the garden, arboretum and sculpture park is set in stunningly beautiful woodland; enhanced by peaceful natural springs, lakes, over seventy striking contemporary sculptures. There are a number of features including a Himalayan Shelter, Pagoda, Summerhouse, Bridges and a Contemplation Circle (consisting of five chairs carved from Giant Redwood).

Many paths leading down (and back up!) the garden are steep with steps but can be avoided by using longer gently sloping routes.

We will leave Edgworth / Bx at around 8:45am, aiming to arrive at 11am. Morning coffee  or tea will be available in the visitor centre on arrival (not included) and we have been offered a short talk in the visitor centre. Following this, those who wish can join a garden tour lasting 1½ to 2 hours (no extra charge). We need to know the numbers interested to organise a second tour if needed.

For lunch they have offered to accommodate us separately from other visitors in the information centre. This will avoid long queues for us and others in the tea room.

Those of us wishing to have lunch will need to order food in advance of the visit (Menus will be available in February).

There is a well stocked Nursery selling many of the plants found in the garden.

We will leave around 3:45pm, arriving home at 7:00-7:30pm after first calling at nearby Daleside Nurseries

Established in 1958, these are family owned and run. In their extensive glasshouses the range of plants include many that are new, unusual or hard to find and in May will include spring bedding. Daleside say that despite the current popoularity of landscaping and decking “Plants are the most important feature in any garden and it is to this end that we strive to produce and source our extensive range. Most of the plants we sell, are grown here on our 8 hectare (20 acres) nursery.”
