SUMMER EVENING VISIT – 16th MAY 2012

WADDOW LODGE GARDEN, WADDINGTON

Thirty seven members of the Society visited the 2 acre organic garden of Peter Foley and Liz Dean at Waddington, near Clitheroe in the Ribble Valley. The weather was amazingly kind to us albeit cool, but dry and sunny.

Peter is a well known speaker and nurseryman who ran Holden Clough Nursery for over 30 years before passing it on to his son and turning his attention to Waddow Lodge.

Woodland Walk

A woodland area at one end of the garden provides flowers and plants to encourage wildlife.

Peter and Liz have extended the garden and revitalised the planting which contains herbaceous borders, a fruit and vegetable garden and a heritage apple orchard, together with lawned areas and beds with heathers, roses and many unusual plants and shrubs.

Peter took us on a guided tour of the garden explaining all the effort that had gone into soil preparation, garden design, ‘green’ initiatives and passing on his extensive knowledge of the planting.

Being an ex-nurseryman, Peter had a wide choice of plants and shrubs for sale, most of which had already been showcased in his garden.

Everyone enjoyed the evening which was rounded off with tea, coffee and wonderful scones, from the tea rooms in Bolton-by-Bowland, all arranged by Liz and her team of helpers.
